greeting all
Sorry for the long time absence...but will try to make up for it.
I recently completed the Three Flags Classic (3FC) after being on the road for 2 1/2 months. I must admit it wore me out! And I decided to tuck in my tail and go home after visiting family in Portland and San Jose.
But after sleeping tons and eating tons and enjoying some wine all in Portland (plus getting my ass kicked by my USMC brother in law) I regained my enthusiasm to attempt the Triple Crown. The only thing needed is to complete the Parks.
Since I was heading South on the I-5 from Portland it made sense to take Grants Pass and see the Redwood NP. I'm glad I did....I've never seen this part of CA so it was quite an eye opener. I visited Crescent City, then Eureka for grins then headed east on CA-299 for Whiskey Town.
OMGosh!!! This is the most fantastically enjoyable ride I have had in the last 3 months. I was attempting the 15 before tossing in the towel so I had partially completed some of the rides. I was thrilled with the Glacier Road To The Sun and enjoyed both US550 and the 191 in AZ.
BUT!!! This ride really warmed my heart. Towering mountains populated with pines et al. A road that is in great shape and full of gentle joys appealing to an old man such as I who only recently starter riding.
And the best treat?
The Trinity River flush with salmon and steelhead and more!
I ended up spending almost 6 hours on this 2 hour ride. I just had to stop everywhere along the road to take in big breaths of vistas, chat with fisherman, sip organic coffee at the Straw House in Big Flat, chat with other riders. I had sooooo much fun on this ride.
So much so that I arrived in WhiskeyTown too late to get my NP passport stamped and have to spend the eve in Redding!
But wait! I've never been here before. So I rode around The Whiskey area, Redding, other little towns and had an absolutely delightful time!
I think this road should be on the 15....but I am unable to compare it since I haven't done all 15.
But I would consider removing VT100 and Back of the Dragon and replacing them with CA-299.
I'm gonna plan to come here next year and do some fishing along this highway.
