Riding a Road King doesn't provide ya'll with much for electronics, communications, yadayadayada. But ya'll know that.
Being on a lot of cross country whoooya's I wanted to be able to listen to music and minimize wind noise and those 18 wheelers chomping up the slab. How to do that???
I discovered the Big Ears that are foam fitted into the canal and do a tremendous job reducing external noise....especially the wind. Being an old and former prop and Helo pilot the little hearing cilias have been clipped a few times. So I bought the Big Ear phones to plug into my MP3 player and accomplish two things: reduce the external noise and listen to my fav sounds. And wow!! That's exactly what occurred....the earphones are of such a high quality that I also use them when on the computer or on any other electronic device. I can still hear anything around me, but the clarity of the music is just fantastic.
So, the next challenge.....
I wanted an intercomm to (a) chat with my passenger and (b) chat with riding bro or buddies. But I also wanted something that would give me connectivity to the MP3 player, bluetooth connectivity to the Android and also the Garmin, plus having a way to listen to FM radio would be a bonus.
Is there such a product? Yep!
I settled on the G9 power set since it afforded all those connectivities......but had one HUGE limitation.....there was not jack into which I could plug my Big Ear phones!
The G9 and all other Scala products limits the user to installed speakers that have to be installed into the helmet ear flat. Which is an easy thing to do since the Scala folks (who reallllly make a great product!) put a grabber type surface that sticks like velcro to the Harley helmet cloth liner!
But how to use the Big ears? Being a tweaker of sorts I knew that all was needed was to clip the speaker wires and install a female plug for the earphone jack. But I didn't have the ability..I needed to find someone.
Hal Aronson was listening to me commiserate in my beer about all this and just gave me a little grin. Now, who is Hal you ask?? He's the guy that runs a franchise (i think) for Big Ears and actually formed my Big Ears phone set for me. He did such a great job that I tout him to all who'll listen (he's in Orange County CA).
Why was he grinnin"? Then he explained. His friend Kyle is heavily experienced in audio and has been working modifications to the Scala Rider for folks that wanted their Big Earphones to be pluggable.
Well, that was easy for me to decide my next move...since I trust him explicitly.
Hal, Kyle and I worked out a plan for the G9 (this was their first mod to the G9...previous mods had been done to the 'Rider'). And they came through.
So now I can plug my Big Ears into the G9, listen to the FM, or the MP3, as well as do bluetooth connections. I haven't been able to play with all the other stuff yet....but I have full confidence that it'll work well cuz that's the G9 function.
If you want to do such a mod give Hal a call at 949-254-7485
Ain't life sweet??
