I've ridden a bunch of miles over the past 40 years, and while I don't consider myself a loner by nature, I like to ride alone. My wife has never been to keen on the idea but she has lived with my need to ride for 44 years now....though not without an occasional conplaint.
If I am going to have a riding partner, it's going to be her, and we don't do intercoms or ipods and such. The ride is all about the tempo of the road, the changes in temperature, the smells of the evnironment, the views......if you want to peak all of these inputs at the same time ride thru Glacier National Park right after they open the highway, when the snow is still 12 feet deep along the side of the road. Truely a great ride....alone or with momma, you don't need a formation of bikes like you might see in the movies, just you, maybe momma, and the road.
Ride Safe, LDR

If on a local to ride I'll ride with the crowd, but on a cross country trip I will ride alone. I enjoy going where the wind blows me and changing direxction on the spur of the moment.

I am a solo rider, very few group rides. Many times I have started off on a group ride only to exit at the first stop. The BEST group ride I have ever joined is the "TRAIL OF TEARS" well planned, well conducted. The "SOUTHERN CRUISERS" is a safe well run group.

When riding in a group: The "leader" blasts off from a stop sign-the last bike is soon going 100 mph to catch-up about the time the leader gets to the next stop-results- passing, rear end collisions and dropped bikes. Riding staggerd- riders pass between the inside and outside bikes. No formation with bikes passing each other, speeding. Riders drinking heavily during a stop. When riders in the group are reckless, unsafe or stupid (each my decision). ALL GOOD REASONS FOR ME TO DROP OUT! and have a good ride.

I would be right behind u leaving the group. Locally we have the Fort Lauderdale HOG chapter and they have award-winning "Road Captains" as well as a monthly meeting for anyone that is going to ride in a group on how to do it safely. In addition, when I go on a Bike Night, any new people to the group received a review of how to ride in the group safely. And if I may make a comment about the lead bike taking off quickly at a light or stop sign..... that is a very common error in addition to turning onto a highway on-ramp where the entire group is left behind to play catch up and the riders all look like a spring stretching way out and then trying to retract what catch-up quickly. The lead bike must take it slower because of exactly what you said. Thank you for your response and sharing. When that kind of thing happens it is so disheartening. Hopefully someone in the group spoke up before the ride was over or certainly before they all headed back. Safety....something to be taken seriously. BuzzCap7

Prefer riding by myself; leave when I want, ride as slow or as fast as I want, stop when I want, change as I wish, etc. etc. etc.
Being a Star Chapter Member for a couple years, I enjoyed the people, and all the Poker Runs, but everyone has their own riding styles, and little quirks.
I do go out and ride with a friend and his wife occasionaly on the weekends.

Yes...those are all the right reasons to drop off of a group ride. I've been a member of our local HOG chapter for about 12 years, but seldom ride with them these days. There is only a handfull of them that I would choose to group ride with...and those rides are rare. As far as touring goes, I usually prefer to ride solo, though occasionally riding with one or two bikes is a welcome change...with the right people! GlideRider
